If you want tulips and daffodils in your Carmel yard next spring, the bulbs go in the ground now. K-State Research and Extension says spring-flowering bulbs can be planted now through October, and roots keep growing as long as the soil stays above 40°F. [K-State] [K-State]

Pick good bulbs

Choose bulbs that are firm and free of rot. K-State says the largest bulbs tend to produce the biggest blooms. [K-State]

Pick the spot and fix the soil

Bulbs do best in full sun to part shade with well-drained soil. K-State says a sandy loam is ideal; if you don't have one, work in organic matter such as compost to about a foot deep. A fertilizer at planting time also helps. [K-State]

How deep and how far apart

K-State notes that mass plantings make a bigger show than bulbs set out in single rows. [K-State]

After planting

  1. Water them in and keep the soil moist so roots can form before winter. [K-State]
  2. Mulch after the ground freezes, not before. K-State says mulch helps keep the soil from freezing and thawing, which can heave bulbs out of the ground. [K-State]

Planning a bigger bed? Fall planting is a good time to think about how next spring's color fits into the rest of the yard.
